Dominican Rite

The Mass has developed for centuries in different ways in East and West.  Not all was uniform in the West, there being different rites in Milan, Spain and Rome, and different Religious Orders’ rites such as Carmelite, Premonstratensian and Dominican.  Here at the Cathedral we the Dominicans offer one of the most ancient rites in the West, the Dominican Rite begun in the mid-thirteenth century.  This Rite was accepted for our Dominican Order and also accepted in some cities, dioceses and countries as their own as well.  The Dominican Rite was approved by Pope Clement IV in 1267, and not revoked during the Tridentine revisions of the Missal under the Dominican, Pope Pius V.

Our Dominican Rite has a few aspects which shorten the Medieval Roman Rite, but the similarities between the Dominican Rite and the Missal of 1962 are conspicuous to the newcomer.  There is a booklet sold in our St. Paul’s Corner bookstore which describes the Rite and postures for the Mass.
