“May angels lead you into paradise; upon your arrival, may the martyrs receive you and lead you to the holy city of Jerusalem. May the ranks of angels receive you, and with Lazarus, once a poor man, may you have eternal rest.”
We extend every sympathy and prayer for your loss. Often funeral arrangements are made for the family by their chosen funeral director. The priests ask that the family contact them to arrange the readings, music, and other aspects of the funeral. If a funeral director is not contracted, family members make contact with one of the priests of the Cathedral. It is best to contact the office in advance and ask for Letha (907-276-3455).
Funerals are usually celebrated on weekdays, except Fridays, and on Saturday mornings.
Visitation
This may occur in the Cathedral an hour before the funeral. For extended visitation on a separate day, please request this of the priests at the Cathedral.
Liturgy
The priest who presides at the funeral liturgy is to be consulted regarding all the details of the Mass including the choice of Scripture readings. Please call our office about the different arrangements for larger or smaller funerals.
Eulogies
Eulogies by family members and friends are best presented at the funeral home visitation, the cemetery or the luncheon that follows. The Cathedral policy is that only one eulogy is allowed at the Mass. It is to be no longer than 3 minutes in length and submitted in writing beforehand.
Cremation
The Church strongly prefers that cremation take place after the full funeral liturgy with the body. However, when this is not possible, all the usual rites which are celebrated with a body present may also be celebrated in the presence of cremated remains. They are not to be scattered or kept in the family home, funeral home or separated into multiple urns. Cremated remains are given the same respect as the body is. Furthermore, cremated remains should be placed beforehand in one urn by a staff member of the funeral home or crematorium, and not done in the Cathedral.
Reception
For use of our parish Hall, please request this during the funeral planning. Our Women of Holy Family provide a light luncheon for anyone who wishes this. Please call the parish office about this: 907-276-3455.
Parking
Due to the large number of events taking place at the Cathedral and the Pastoral Center, parking is only available during the funeral and any receptions which take place here. You may not remain parking here for receptions taking place elsewhere.
